Protected Areas in the World
Marine Protected Areas are an essential tool for the recovery, protection and increase of ocean biodiversity, productivity and resilience, and ensure the supply of ecosystem goods and services for current and future generations.
MedPAN and RAC/SPA have conducted in 2016 an assessment of where we stand with Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in the Mediterranean. Therefore, there are 1,231 MPAs and OECMs in the Mediterranean Sea, covering 179,798 km2 which places a surface of 7.14% under a legal designation.
In this section we present the Marine Protected Areas of the countries of our volunteers and interns.
France, Latvia, Spain, Serbia, Portugal, Tunisia and USA.
