Beautiful tour of the “Villa di Pollio Felice di Regina Giovanna”
In the early afternoon of the 9th April the volunteer group of M.A.R.E. got to know Gaia – a student of archaeology. With her we had a great tour to “Villa di Pollio Felice” – near the “Capo di Sorrento”, which was built in the 1st century before Christ.
Gaia showed us all of the ruins, which were mostly well preserved. First we walked beside some walls, which were the last remains of tanks which the people of the villa used to store water.
After that we went to a place which was like a big platform. In the past there was the garden with a little fountain. Also we saw the remains of walls of the dining room, the kitchen and a little church. We had a break on the platform to take our panini lunch, enjoy the beautiful sea view and the sun.
Also we discovered some remains of mosaic and marble. After that we went over the natural arch of stone which was used as a bridge to connect two areas of the villa. We climbed the stony way down to enjoy the little bay inside which people used for anchoring the ships. A few of us took off their shoes to try the water.
At the end of our trip with Gaia we had another break at “Capo Santa Fortunata” to enjoy an amazing view of the sea, Sorrento and Vesuvio.
It was an amazing trip, thank you to Gaia for this excursion and for sharing so much interesting things about archaeology.

1st everything
EVS project M.A.R.E. 2nd round.
8 volunteers, 4 countries – Germany, France, Latvia and Spain –
met in Nerano’s scuola to gather their energy.
For the next 7 month they are going to take care of the marine environment
of the baia di Ieranto…
1st encounter.
4th of April, arrival to Italy, interest and excitement about the project, marine environment, nature’s beauty, new culture and… new people.
First meeting, different accents of English, first attempts at getting to know each other better. And first thought:
– Thank God they are normal people.
1st accommodation.
Exploration, creation and recreation of our new living space. CLEANING a lot. Making a unique atmosphere for inspiration and feeling at home.
Some musical instruments in the living room, ecological books in the library corner, kitchen as a meeting place and dining room’s walls full of “Good appetite” and “Cheers!” in different languages – this is what the volunteers’ place looks like.
Thoughts about communication.

what you hear, what you think you understand, what you want to understand, what you understand… There are at least 10 chances that we will not understand each other… But let’s try anyway.”

“1st time eating mozarella” or “Strange national meals”.
Kvass, camelles, tortilla de patatas, franzbroetchen… buon apetito! First strange meal shared together to learn about each other. And enjoy our first piece of fresh (!) mozarella. Soooo good!
1st time with the hand in the earth.
The first earth under our nails, to start planting our first autonomy.
Working all day, fighting with hard Nerano ground to prepare it for new plants – vegetables, spices and flowers. Hard-hard work, but what could be better than eating basilico from your own garden?
Garden work makes you happy…
after it is finished.
1st breath of Nerano air.
From Marina del Cantone to the top of the village, from the sweet sound of the sea on the stones to the fresh wind of San Constanzo…
Walking through small and charming little streets, Nerano and its territory is the perfect place to discover a nice landscape while training your legs and breathing skills.
Hard, but worth it…
1st statements about volunteering.
Asking volunteers who they are and what they do can be tricky sometimes. Mina and Alba did a great job and (finally!) we know the difference between a volunteer and a paid worker.
– Volunteer work = ecological work?
– Hmm… Depends.
1st meeting with the team of the Punta Campanella park.
Sympathetic moment shared between traditional European food and presentation of everybody.
It has been really interesting for our group to understand the concrete actions settled by the park to preserve the marine biodiversity and make it better known by anyone.
Monitoring of the undersea fauna and faura, evaluation of the eventual damages caused by human activities, raising educational environmental campaign – for kids or adults. Hard work! We feel proud to give them a helping hand these months, and to carry with them the same message of respect towards the environment that surround us, and let us live in such a beautiful place.

Una bellissima gita alla Villa di Pollio Felice di Regina Giovanna
Nel primo pomeriggio del nove Aprile, il gruppo di volontari ha fatto la conoscenza di Gaia, una studentessa di archeologia. Con lei abbiamo fatto una bellissima visita guidata della Villa di Pollio Felice vicino Capo di Sorrento. Questa villa romana fu costruita nel primo secolo avanti cristo.
Gaia ci ha mostrato tutte le rovine; la prima zona che abbiamo visto erano le cisterne, che gli abitanti hanno usato per raccogliere l’acqua.
Dopo siamo andati su un piano dove c’era un giardino con una piccola fontana. Lì abbiamo visto anche i resti delle mura della sala da pranzo, della cucina e di una piccola chiesa. Con una bella vista sul mare abbiamo fatto una pausa per mangiare nostri panini e rilassarci sotto il sole.
Dopo la pausa abbiamo scoperto alcuni resti di mosaico e marmo sul pavimento e sulle mura che affacciano verso Sorrento. Poi abbiamo attraversato un ponte naturale che collegava due parte della villa. Siamo scesi un sentiero pietroso per esplorare la baia dove la gente arrivava con le barche. Alcuni di noi hanno provato l’acqua con i piedi.
Alla fine della visita abbiamo fatto un’altra pausa sul Capo Santa Fortunata con la bella vista di Sorrento e del Vesuvio. Grazie mille a Gaia per questa bella giornata e per condividere le sue conoscenze in archeologia.
